With the year coming to a close we reflect on everything that we should be thankful for and appreciate life with those who are around us, helping to bring joy everyday. Before we get to the sweet stuff though let’s do a quick little reality check.
A Quick Story…
Everyone, at some point or another, experiences good times and bad times. This year I had to spend a significant amount of time in hospitals where we lost some family members. Luckily we had the means to endure and get past it all, but it did take a toll on us emotionally, physically, and financially. Not everyone is as fortunate to have the resources.
As I reflect back, I remember people of all ages, ethnicity, and culture around us, all waiting to hear something positive every time a nurse / doctor came out. Nothing was more heart breaking than to see the families who are trying to find the strength and resources to keep moving forward and give their loved ones the care they need.
I think we tend to automatically assume that the families we see in the hospital are San Diego residents. I’m no exception, even though I’ve worked in this field. It’s bad enough to go through a family tragedy while you are in your own area. Can you imagine what someone else is going through who had to travel great distances to get the care they need for their family member?
Here in San Diego we are very fortunate that we have resources to help aid families while they go through uncertain times. One of those resources is located directly in front of Rady’s Childrens Hospital. And for good reason. Throughout the year and during the holidays the hospital gets families coming in from all over the world who have to stay in San Diego for months on end.
We San Diegan’s know we are one of the more expensive places to visit and live. Once again, imagine if you were from out of state, the doctor tells you that your son or daughter will need to stay longer than expected and you know that your resources will run out. What would you do?
What Charity are we helping?
We are so lucky to have the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego (RMHCSD). They help families in this very predicament and unfortunately sometimes worse. You may have seen them in the community with red boots asking for a small donation or raffling off a Multi-Million dollar mansion on TV. That’s because the services they offer and the amount of people they serve year after year are so great, that every bit helps to keep the doors open.
They offer everything from Lodging, Meals and Family Care to Education, Entertainment and Fitness services. You can even get a haircut! I guess you can say it’s a home away from home. For so many that is exactly what’s needed to keep their spirits and hopes up.
For many years I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to bring valuable resources to the RMHCSD. Technology, Web Services, connecting them to community leaders and yes, I donated a Google Virtual Tour. Since 2013, families have been able to see inside the facility (from Google) before they arrive in San Diego. This helps to put their mind at ease because they can now see where they will be living for their foreseeable future. If you haven’t seen the tour be sure to check it out at the end of this post.
For 2015, we wanted to do something nice once again but this time we want to cut a check and with your help SD 360 Tours will be able to do just that.
